 The North Carolina Custom Knifemakers Guild in conjunction with Montgomery Community College sponsors the following classes:

 

Course: Custom Folding Knives*
Dates: May 1-4, 2008
Cost: $315
Instructor: Ed Van Hoy
Description:
Design and craft a custom liner-lock folding knife. The class will show the basic principles and methods of construction required to make a folding knife. It will cover design, machine work, drilling, tapping, grinding the blade and finishing. Each student will complete one knife using both machine shop and common hand tools.

Course: Grinding Knife Blades*
Dates: June 25-27, 2008
Cost: $240
Instructor: Ed Halligan
Description:
Learn fixed blade design using the basic principles and methods of knife construction, including how to hollow grind and heat treat knife blades, how to make guards and how to finish a knife handle.

Course: American Bowie Knife*
Dates:  August 1-3, 2008
Cost:  $240
Instructor:  James Batson
Description:  Learn the basics of forging an American classic knife from the foremost Bowie expert in the nation. You will learn how to forge the blade, prepare it with a file and grinder for heat treating. You will also learn how to heat treat the blade and sharpen it. Course is designed for all levels of student's skill.
  

Course: Metal Engraving Scroll and Scroll Design
Dates: August 4 - 15, 2008 (No Weekends)
Cost: $60 plus $50 supply fee
Instructor: Jesse Houser
Description: 
This two-week course will focus on drawing and cutting various types of scroll design. Beginning and advanced students will be able to pace themselves based on their own abilities. During the second week, students will be drawing and cutting scroll designs onto live projects.

Course: Automatic Folding Knives*
Dates: September 11 - 14, 2008
Cost: $315

Description: 
Design and craft a spring loaded folding knife. The course will include the basic principles and methods of construction required to make a spring loaded automatic folder. Techniques will include drilling, tapping grinding and finishing.   

Course: Forged Tomahawks*
Dates: September 26 - 28, 2008
Cost: $240
Instructor: Wayne Whitley
Description: 
Forge and finish an Early American tomahawk, including forging, grinding, heat treating and finishing the blade and handle. A hands on course. Instructor will furnish all supplies for the students to purchase.

Course: Basic Knife Making*
Dates: October 2 -5, 2008
Cost: $315
Instructor: Tommy McNabb
Description:
Learn knife making by designing and making a knife under the guidance of the instructor. Each student will grind, heat treat and finish a knife using the stock removal method. This class is for beginners to intermediates who want to perfect their knife making talents.


Course: Basic Damascus Steel Making*
Dates: October 10 - 12, 2008
Cost: $240
Instructor: Tommy McNabb
Description:
This will be an intensive class covering Damascus steel making, basic and advanced pattern development, and finishing. The class will address many aspects of making Damascus steel including billet preparation, steel combination, and tooling.


Course: The Art of Mokume Gane*
Dates: October 24 - 26, 2008
Cost: $240
Instructor: Phillip Jones
Description:
Learn the ancient Japanese techniques of combining different copper-based metals. The decorative skills can be used in knifemaking or jewelry making.
